An Investigation of Implicit and Explicit English Language Exposure by Higher Education EFL Students: A Case Study of GFP Students at the University of Buraimi

This quantitative study investigates implicit and explicit exposure to the English language among General Foundation Program (GFP) students at the University of Buraimi. It examines whether the GFP students at the University of Buraimi rely more on implicit or explicit exposure and identifies their preferred exposure activities. A total of 119 students were selected for the study using convenience sampling during the 2024-25 academic year. Data were collected through an electronic questionnaire and analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS)/ version 27. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to examine the patterns of exposure. The results show that the GFP students at the University of Buraimi rely more on implicit than explicit exposure. They prefer to use English in real-life situations outside the classroom, reflecting a tendency toward communicative and authentic learning. As for the explicit exposure, the results indicate that the GFP students at the University of Buraimi favour face-to-face interaction with English speakers to develop their speaking skills. These findings highlight the importance of integrating authentic and communicative learning opportunities in higher education EFL contexts. The implications of the results for teaching practices and future research avenues are discussed.
